I started researching a well-known website about their ethics. How do they make their customers addicted to their website? How do they ensure that customers return? For this project I chose the Bol.com website. It is a well-known website with a great name recognition and a good reputation. That is why I wanted to investigate how they attract customers and if they do this ethically.
I compared the points that are invented by Tristan Harris, Cialdini and B.J. Fogg, to the Bol.com website. From this, it was noticeable that Bol.com uses many techniques to make the user return and sometimes also to buy the products from the site more/ faster.
That is why I started looking at how I can break through these techniques in order to change the user's behavior. I have made a version of the website where the user is not manipulated.
Why did I choose this project for my portfolio?
I chose this project for my portfolio because I think this is a very interesting project. I find it fascinating to figure out how the brain works and how it becomes addicted to certain stimuli. In addition, I enjoyed seeing how companies applied these addiction methods. After the investigation, I am more aware of the addiction methods around me. And I like to see the other side of ethics, mainly how to design ethically from the perspective of the user rather than the purposes of a company.
